2010 Christmas Holiday Observed?

Christmas falls on Sat. 12/25/10. Our firm usually gives two holidays. I would like to know what other firms giving two days are doing - Thurs. and Fri or Fri and Mon.?

Funny you should ask. Tonight (Nov. 3) we are sending out an email to the HR masses asking them just this question and others about the upcoming holiday season and the 2010 holidays. The survey will run through Nov. 11 and we'll report the results in the Nov. 13 issue of HR Hero Line.

We shut down for the last two weeks of December. Its how we recoup all the holidays our staff have to work during the rest of the year (Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, etc).

So, that is one HR headache I dont have to deal with.

Our company shuts down Christmas Eve and return January 2nd unless that is a weekend then it is the following Monday. We can get quite a few days off if the holiday days hit right. This time off is also paid.

We will take Friday and then give a floating day that must be used between Dec. 20 and March 31of the following year.

And it looks like next year with July 4, Christmas and New Years falling on Saturdays it is making a difference in which days businesses will offer as paid holidays.

Thank you, Wendi. The summary is good, but it would have been nice to have seen the answers broken down further. That is, I can look to see how we compare to others taking the survey, but the ones in my area or the ones in my industry would have more meaning. For instance, if it turns out the the respondants with the most holidays all work for government, and I don't, then it is easier to disregard their responses. However, if most in my industry have twice as many holidays as we do, then I really need to sit up and take notice. Still, it was an informative survey. Thank you.

We will be closed 12/23/10 (Thursday in observance of Christmas Eve) and 12/24/10 (Friday in observance of Christmas Day). The same goes for the following week and New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. We always try to switch the days around to give us two four-day weekends.

As a government agency, we are mandated by law as to when we can legally close. If Xmas, NY, or the 4th of July fall on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is a Holiday. If one of those holidays falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is a Holiday. No guesswork here!

We close at noon on the 24th and then will be closed on the 25th. We will be open business on Monday the 27th. We also close at 3:00 p.m. on Dec. 31st and are closed on January 1st.
