Honeycrisp Apples

Ok, this is technically not a recipe but has anyone here ever tried a Honeycrisp apple? My wife just brought home a bag last week and they are amazing. Sweet, tangy and juicy. They taste like candy.

Apparently they are some genetic mix of a honeygold and a mystery species that was grown at some university in the 60s. I think aliens were involved.

Regarless, they are some fine apples. If you like apples or you use apples in your recipes, check these out.

Paul, here in the Land of 10,000 Hybrids, one of them just happens to be the apple of which you speak. Yep! The Honeycrisp is Minnesota's own.

Most of the fruits this state turns out are not worth mentioning, or at least are ones we want to forget. But the Honeycrisp is different. Finally, a fruit that's not a damn fruit.

Here is my honey crisp apple recipe:

Ingredients:
1 Honey Crisp Apple

Wash apple in your sink. Remove any small sticker as they can be hard to swallow.

Slice apple into 6-8 slices and put into a bowl.

Serves 1-8 people.

I love honeycrisp apples, and agree that your recipe cannot be improved upon. I live blocks from a true foodie type grocery market -- the produce dept. alone is the size of an average supermarket. On any given day, they are likely to have 20 or more variety of apples, but I always look for the honeycrisps. A runner-up would be the jonagolds -- a hybrid between jonathans and golden delicious.

Whirlwind, I know what market your talking about...man am I homesick! I'm dyin for some chuy's or threadgills! Anyway, agree on the honey crisp...I have a friend who never liked apples but I made her try the honey crisp and she's "hooked"

Yes, yes, yes: Central Market. I'm nearby the original location. It's my Saturday treat. I used to hate grocery shopping. Now it's an outing, a treat, a pleasure. Last Saturday night I made a recipe (seared scallops with champagne, vanilla, and butter sauce) for which I bought a single vanilla bean that cost $6.99. It was sublime, and I didn't regret a single cent.

The afternoon before that, I ate lunch at Threadgill's. Sorry, don't mean to torture you! Come visit! I have a wonderful guest room with private bath, walking distance from Central Market. It's yours for the asking!

That's ok on the torture x:-(...all my friends tell me when they go to my fav eateries too! They even go so far to call me while they are there and tell me what they are eating! When I do get down there I do a "whirlwind" tour of the favorites and then have to get 2 seats on the plane back! I go with a half empty suit case so I can pack some take home! Thanks for the offer of a room but my mom would kill me if I didn't stay with her. Maybe if I do a "sneak in" visit...hmmm...have to think on that one....

I found them last year at our local fruit stand in central North Carolina. I agree they are the best apple I have ever ate and I am hooked.

Come to Minnesota, Patty, the Land of 10,000 Rotton Apples and One Good One. The Honeycrisps are everywhere. This hybrid was developed at the U. of Minnesota and it is one of the few fruits from this state that ever amounted to much. The other fruits got elected and it was all down hill from there.
