Swanson Chicken Broth

We've discovered Swanson's Chicken Broth. In the cardboard box container, 32 oz, 100% fat free, 15 calories per cup, zero carbs, hardly any sugars. This might just be the perfect product. Even the little plastic snap-lid is perfectly designed.

This is not just a Christmas Baking thing anymore or something only old women use. Keep a box handy in the refrigerator to add to most anything: soup, roast, hash, burgers, all kinds of leftovers, chicken pie, anything that got too dry, anything that needs to be smoother or softer or kicked up a notch. It's amazing.

Swanson's beef broth is another staple in my house-- for soup, soup, stews, quick onion soup etc. etc.

I agree. It is the greatest thing since, well, a cheese steak. I use it instead of water in the bottom of a saucepan under the steamer basket to steam veggies. Hmmmmmmmmmm! Delish!

I use it for a Croatian soup with little dumplings, carrots and kluski noodles. There is ALWAYS about 20 cans in my cupboard.

Replace half of the milk you use in making mashed potatoes with chicken broth. It makes the best mashed potatoes.

Add a bit to the water when you boil pasta. Both the chicken and beef come in mighty handy on Boy Scout campouts. Really helps the old pot of mulligan stew.

C'mon Don, don't tell me you haven't seen the cans?!?! I like 'em better with the smaller amounts to deal with. The box is like 2 1/2 cans I think.

The neat thing about the box is you stick it in the refrigerator and it takes up very little room and adds color and structure to the middle shelf. It is much more attractive than a half full can with aluminum foil sloppily crushed over the top. We're talking aesthetics here, Leslie. Refrigerator aesthetics. And with a can, you always have to worry about whether to use a can opener to completely remove the top or a punch can opener like an old beer can opener to make a triangular hole. The box removes all this worry.

Speaking of beer can openers...how sad is this.

I said to my daughter (she's 9 going on 30), "Get mommie the can opener". I of course meant the pop a hole in the can "beer opener". She proceeded to drag outside the electric can opener. After a chuckle, I said no I need the beer bottle opener. She looks at me with her head tilted side ways and says "MOM!!! I don't know what your talking about, beer bottles twist open!!"

It's sad that kids today don't know the good ole days of coke in glass bottles that you opened on the soda machine or had to use an opener for. We'll look like cavemen by the time these kids have babies.

Don't ever throw one away, especially if you have a round-plastic-handled one with the name of a bar or business stenciled on it. Those old poke-a-hole can openers are historic and will be valuable. And one day your nine year old can tell this story.

You want to buy one of mine, Don? It's an old, short, pocket-sized model. Came in a box of "C" rations from 1975. Has "Property of US Govt" engraved on it. I wore it on the same chain as my dog tags. x:-)

You're referring to the old P-38 can opener. I still have one, why I don't know considering c-rats came and went long before my time. Still great for camping and such.

Nope. They included P-38s as well and I still have one or two lying around (like you, I have no idea why). In the c-rats we got they also included a small "churchkey" hole-poking can opener with a bottle opener on the other end.

I have something from WWII I bet you never saw. It's my dad's parachute knife. A folding knife about a foot and a half long with a big black handle and a terrificly big, sharp blade. You slip a thin sheath on the sharp edge and push a retainer in the middle and collapse it in half. It was for cutting yourself out of a tree or other adventures once on the ground.

Oh man-o-man I'd love to get a hold of one of those. By the time I started jumping out of airplanes in the 82nd (hold you hand over your heart) Airborne Division they replaced those knives with plastic hook knives.

AF aircrew members have a bright orange knife in their survival vests. Mean-looking switchblade (it would be mean-looking if it wasn't orange, that is) for cutting tangled 'chute lines, etc.
