RC Cola and Moonpies

As part of my wife's never-ending process to change my Yankee heritage, we will be going to Bell Buckle, TN this Saturday for the RC Cola and Moonpie Festival.

Not really being a fan of either, I thought I would poll the Forum on the finer points of either delicacy.

Didn't they use to advertise RC Cola and Moonpies together? It was well before my time, but I have heard my parents sing a jingle "have an RC Cola and a Moonpie."

I grew up drinking RC Cola, and still prefer it over Pepsi and Coca-Cola. Can't say that I am a fan of Moonpies. Taste alot like cardboard to me.

My memories of chopping cotton for hours in the bright sun and finally getting near enough to the truck that you could run over and grap a cold RC and a Moonpie for a quick snack; this was hard to beat!!!
Back in my wally-world days, the stores would have contest to see which store could sell the most moonpies. The stores would go through 10's of thousands and had fun building the displays.

Whether with an RC or something else, I will challenge you to eat a whole moonpie without SOMETHING to wash it down with. The little bit of marshmallow in the middle offers some limited relief, but, as was pointed out, the outer halves are about as near cardboard as you can get. When I was growing up, this combination had an ethnic connotation attached to it, but I know not why.

If you put the moonpie in the fridge for awhile it tastes a lot better. Course I think all chocolate tastes better cold or frozen. I'm not a fan of any cola except maybe diet Dr P but they all taste pretty much the same to me. And I agree with Don it is impossible to eat a moonpie w/o something to wash it down with so chug on that rc cola, personally I prefer beer with chocolate.

Well, all this RC Cola and moonpie stuff doesn't get me as excited as heading to Ocean City later this summer for some boardwalk lemonade, Thrasher fries (fried in peanut oil) sprinkled with vinegar and old bay and some funnel cake.

Idaho potatoes fried in 100% peanut oil and topped with White House apple cider vinegar and/or Old Bay, served in a cup, never with ketchup.

The only place to get them is on the boardwalk at Ocean City. I have tried others and they just don't taste the same. Maybe it's nostalgic.

They're cut just like regular home made fries? Are they salted or does ebay take the place of salt. The vinegar isn't sour or bitter? Duess not.

Massachusetts - I have yet to see one in 40(or so) years. But we do have chocolate covered cranberries! Deidre

Gee, Garth, I wouldn't know where to look for one. Is it in the candy aisle, the marshmallow aisle, or the cardboard aisle? And how do vanilla and bananas fit into this mix?

Whenever I have seen them at the grocery store, it has been by the snack foods (Oatmeal Cakes, etc.).

I normally see them at gas stations, that ought to be enough to tell the sort of delicacy they really are. The vanilla and bananna are the other flaors I have seen offered. Since I have not had one for years (I just could never acquire the taste for cardboard), I cannot attest to how these flavors rate against chocolate. I think they would work well if yu needed to plug a leak, with the marshmelloe cream and the cardboard-like graham crackers, they could expand rapidly and hold a decent seal. That is about all I would say theyare good for. I stand by the s'more. Ain't nothing like the real thing!

People are nuts if they are looking for moonpies on the internet. They are in every grocery in America. They're in fact, well, as tasty as, well, sardines, and just as popular.

It is obvious from these responses that not many of you grew up in the South (GA). I like Dutch2 have wonderful memories of eating this delicious treat. As a child I was waken up at before 6:00 in the hot summer (before AC) to go out and work in tobacco. The only thing that kept me going was knowing that a moonpie and RC was waiting. In fact, if I was really good, Daddy would let me have one for breakfast (and Mother never knew.. she wouldn't let us have soft drinks.)
This was over 35 years ago... even before Tab. I didn't know RC cola was still in business. (Even from the Coke state, RC's used to be the best seller down here along with grape and orange. I can remember touring the RC plant as a child.)
I hope you enjoyed this delicacy.

I never connected RC Cola and a Moonpie with the South. I grew up in LA (lower Akron, that is) and we regularly enjoyed both. You can't go much more North without running into Cleveland or Lake Erie.

Deidre................ they have moonpies in the Shaws Market on North Main Street. just bought some for my granddaughter last week - the box emptied pretty fast, not sure who inhaled contents....I'll bet it was her Grampy.......
