Why would some one Noodle?

I watched two guys on tv a few nights ago go to great lengths to Noodle. I still can't figure out why. No money was exchanged, they did not get paid for their efforts and yet they considered it their job. It makes me glad I work in HR!.

  • Ok, what the .... is noodle? and was this on one of those x rated channels?
  • I've heard of canoodle but not noodle. What is it?
  • Are you referring to fishing by swimming under water and reaching up into logs, etc and pulling out these huge catfish? My granddad loved doing this. He would even sink logs so he knew where they were. Really had to be careful when he grabbed the fish to make sure that he had the fish and not vice-a-versa.
Just give me a line and a pole any day over this method....
  • Yea, but it took 2 days worth of effort, several muddy ponds, lakes, and bad weather just to get one cat fish. Then they just fried it and ate it, didn't even try to sell it to a restaurent or something. They wore special gloves in order not to get cut by the razor sharp gills in the fish. Hoped they wouldn't get bit by a snake or snapping turtle or any other animal/fish instead of a catfish!
  • I too was always afraid he would reach up in a log and grap hold of a snake or worst yet a snapping turle but he would tell me they breath air not water; so they will not be "holded up" back in a log under water.
Sure had some great fried catfish, with hush-puppies and home made tar-tar sauce after his trips.
  • I used to go with my grandfather "mudding" for turtles. A turtle backs into it's hole and due to it's shell structure, cannot strike upwards. He would run his hand up against the top of the hole, grab the tail and pull the sucker out. He never wore any PPE and I have seen him grab snakes by the tail and literally snap their heads off. Those were the good ole' days.
  • POPEYE,
I can't help but wonder what I will be doing with my grandkids that they will remember and report to others as being something really special and/or weird long after I am gone.....
It certainly won't be noodleing or snapping the heads off snakes by popping them like a whip.
  • I never heard of noodling, but you just defined 'hand grabbling' and I spelled it properly.

  • I don't know either. Should this be in the recipe section?

It was a federal case due to crossing state lines for the Baton Rouge motel venture.

I reckon this is 'noodling' but I would certainly not watch it on Television, whether underwater or on land.

Noodling is the second most popular pastime in California and parts of Vermont. x:-)

  • What's the fi....oh, never mind. x:-)
  • What do you mean, "what's the fi.."? This is not a place to shrink from comments or questions.

  • Well, Noodling is what the guys on the show called it. On A&Es Dirty Jobs show. They also said you could get bit by the snapping turtles and snakes as you're sticking your hand in some hole underneath a log, underneath the water. Billy Bob and Joe Bob were showing Mike Rowe how to noolde and what could happen if you stuck your hand in the wrong hole.

I do a great deal of catfishing in the oxbow lakes up and down the Mississippi River. Large catfish there sometimes. Have many friends who have been into hand grabbling for years and years. Some wear wet suits and do it in the winter even. There is a season for it in this state, legally. Pipes, rusted barrels, rotten tree trunks, logs, washing machine drums, freezers...whatever you can position and secretely mark so nobody else 'runs your barrels'. Water typically from 4 to 8 feet.

Most of the time you walk and pull your boat along with a rope or by hand. Some of my friends have gashes that have scarred up and down their arms. One lost two fingers. Not at all uncommon to feel something soft and slick with your hand and not have a clue what it is. You're underwater and can't see an inch and you grip it and come to the top with it and haul it over the side of the boat. Usually it's a 10-50 pound catfish, or at least you hope it is.
