We have an employee who called in because she was going to be tardy for second shift . . . very considerate of her.

"My doorknob fell off and I can't get out of the house . . . but I'll be there as soon as I get out."

Can anybody top this one?

I hope I can keep a straight face when she finally shows up today.

I once couldn't come to work cause the electricity was off so I couldn't get my car out of the garage. Now I DO know that it can be lifted manually but I'm a rather small person with a bad back and there was no way I could lift the door.

I'd like to be there today. But I went to the Packer's game and wanted it to snow so badly that later that night, because of the bourbon and brats, I dreamed it did and dreamed that there was a snowdrift piled at my door 5 feet high. I'm afraid to look out, but I know I can't get there. Maybe tomorrow.

I can't top that but I did win a HR HERO t-shirt (back before they gave them out indiscriminately!) by offering my favorite true employee excuse by an employee who was 20 minutes late to his dish room shift.

"I dreamed that I was already here."

I keep it taped to my wall. Otherwise no one would ever believe it.

I like one, that I think I saw here, about the employee who didn't return from lunch. It was raining too hard and she didn't want to get out of the car in the parking lot so she drove back home instead!

My new favorite popped up this week. An employee left on a Thursday morning and was gone all the rest of that week and the following week without calling. When she did call in to ask about her job she said she was in Texas and "there were no phones that would call Alabama." She claime that all the phones in Texas (including her cell phone) would not call long distance for 7 days. That's her story and she's stickin' to it.

I had an employee who claimed there were no telephones anywhere in Puerto Rico. Of course, he didn't explain why he was in Puerto Rico.

Years ago when we had a big snowfall - about 12-15 inches, one ee drove about 7 miles trying to get to work. He got within about 100 yards and couldn't make it up the hill to the plant so he turned around drove the 7 miles home and called to say he couldn't make it to work because of the storm. When I heard how close he was to the plant, I explained to him that we ALL had trouble and we ALL parked in the KMart parking lot and walked the last 100 yards.

Sounds a bit like the person that couldn't get to work because the battery in the key fob had run down and therfore, they couldn't unlock their car door to allow them access to their car so they could drive to work.
Granted with all these new gadgets, it has been a long time since I actually used the key to unlock the car door, but last time I checked the key would still unlock the door.
Some People, ya just gotta luv 'em.

An HR co-worker called off stating her husband was bitten by an alligator. We're in Florida.

Now that one I would accept. People who aren't familiar wonder why we would be anywhere near places where alligators might roam, but hey, that's almost the whole state of Florida so we can't stay away. We swim in the ponds and rivers just as the alligators do. Heck, you can't even call you backyard pool safe here. Alligators have been found in built-in, in-ground pools!

My payroll clerk called in a couple of weeks ago and said she couldn't come to work because her doctor told her not to wear any underwear that day. Actually, there was a good reason for that, but it sounded funny to hear her say it!

Just had one where an employee requested Personal Leave because her daughter and granddaughter came home for a visit. Her daughter went out drinking all night and wasn't home the following morning. So , the employee had to stay home and watch the granddaughter. Guess what.......it's approved!
