Closed Pay Day

Our bi-weekly payroll happens to fall on both Memorial Day and Labor Day this year. We are going to be closed for both holidays, which are Monday's.

Does anyone see any problems with us completing and processing payroll the next working day, which would give the employees their wages a day later than they would normally recieve them?

When this happens, we complete and process a day early ..don't know if this would work for you.

For those who pay semi-monthly, what do you do when payday falls on a weekend?

We pay on the 15th and last day of the month, but if payday falls on a holiday or weekend, we always process early. Just keeps the employees happy.

You do need to check your state law on this. But I suspect, even if there are no legal mandates to pay a day early, you probably should.

We also pay ahead. The EEs all want the money to help with their plans for these holidays. Helps keep them happy.

We usually publish our exact paydays at the beginning of the year and this usually takes care of all questions.

In your case, I would suggest that you pay a day early instead of late...sometimes it's a psychological thing...if you keep the pay a day later employees think you are holding out on them...if you give it to them a day early...you are a saint!

Keep your employees happy and pay them early. Why make them wait over a weekend or holiday. It will make for better morale.

I have my mortgage automatically withdrawn on the 15th of each month. Depending on the timing of checks hitting if you were to pay me a day late, you could cause either checks to bounce or there to be insufficient funds for my mortgage payment. So if you pay me later than you are supposed to I would be expecting you to pay all of the fees associated with that, and do all the leg work involved.
So needless to say, the golden rule is you never pay late, pay early, it is how we do it.

We are paid weekly and because of our pay period ending on Sunday and processing payroll on Monday (We have Direct Deposit) the payday is on Thursday. So without stopping everyone's direct deposit (more trouble because employees forget it's a live check and tear it up)we tell employees several weeks ahead of time that their pay won't be deposited until Friday. I apologize for any problems but I let them know in advance so that they can plan for it.

Absolutely not. Use the next business day. Just send a memo in advance to the employees notifying them of the change so they have the time to adjust to the change. Post a memo by the time clock and lobby board as well.
