How much to Pay for a good assistant?

I am in need of some help. This is my first stop to finding this information so as much as you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.
I am wanting to hire an assistant to my Human Resource department. I was wondering what the going rate was these days for a good assistant. I am requesting a college graduate with 0-2 years experience. My company is in the MidWest. Please help!

You might try searching Salary.com for info. The salaries are a little high in most cases, but at least it is a start.

I'm in Texas and have paid anywhere from $25k to $36K.

I pay my assistant $35K, but she has also been an HR Manager. She support both myself and the CEO, so she has a heck of a job.

The catch 22 is often the mentality of upper management that 'since she's only a college graduate with no real experience, we ought to be able to get her real cheap'. Of course that is often true. It is always also true that if you get her as cheap as you can, your job will only be a short term training opportunity for her and she will be constantly searching. Try to hit the mid point of whatever range you do establish. And 'fight' management for that.

In Iowa, HR Assistants make $13/hr, HR Coordinators make $15/hr. There is a difference between the two. Coordinators generally must have experience & education whereas Assistants only one of the two or a combo of both. I would never start someone out at less than $13/hr, especially since they'll probably have student loans to pay back for the next 20 years. Good luck with your new hire!

My assistant is a college grad and was hired as the payroll clerk in accounting and making $9.50 per hour. Payroll was transfered back to its right home under me and I increased her to $10.00 per hour and in 6 months she had taken on a multitude of hr assistant functions. I have now designated her as the HR assistant and raised her to $11.50 per hour. That is a competitive rate in this community. She is a super troop and will, in a few years, become Pork after I retire from this old working world. $24,000 per annum with overtime is very competitive. she also knows that she is the highest paid non-exempt administrative staff member in the company.
