FMLA - Reason for Leave

Quick question:
An employee has up to 12 weeks of leave....can there be one, two,
or multiple leave reasons in that 12 weeks?
Example: First leave is 6 weeks for maternity, then 2 months later
2 weeks for seriously ill parent, then later
1 week for seriously ill spouse
__
total so far 9 weeks

and employee still has 3 weeks left in that rolling calendar year??

Thanks much!

  • Yes. The 12 weeks applies to FMLA of any and all circumstances during the 12 month period you observe at your company. 12 weeks during the 12 months, regardless of the number of types of situations, as long as each one of them meets the definitions. And we have probably 12 employees here who will milk that 12 weeks right down to the last day, using multiple situations that 'manage' to meet the definitions.
  • Hi Don,
Thanks very much for your quick reply. I thought as much...but had
another HR person tell me it all had to be for the same reason which
didn't make sense to me.....so I'll be glad to pass on your reply
to her as well! Happy New Year!
    Regards, Madeline
