Hi. I'm new at the Forum but have been a member of HRhero for over a year. I'm working on implementation of polices and procedures and need your assistance. Where can I find general "start-up" information for 1) Confidentiality of personnel records and 2)Document retention.

Sorry with all the questions but the more specific you get, the more help we might be able to provide.
Going back to your questions, Yes, I'm writing the policies myself. It will be terrific if I can get some sample policies regarding these 2 topics. And to be more specific re: document retention, it will include: personnel files, payroll files, benefits reports (medical, 401k, etc) ....... just to give you guys an idea.
Payroll records: 3 yrs., unless you have a staff that makes tips than it is 4 years.
I-9: The later of three yrs. from the date of hire or 1 yr. after termination (file separately).
W-4: Not req'd but I would keep them in the personnel file.
Benefit plans: 6 yrs. and at least 1 yr. after termination of the PLAN.
EE evaluations, wage rates, merit system, collective bargaining agreements, etc.: 3 years.
Employee records (name, DOB, rate, compensation): 3 years.
I hope this helps. As far as writing the policies, just make sure to be very clear in communicating policies/procedures. Good luck!

Now it's public!!!!!!
Welcome to the forum!
Another great place to find sample policies and procedurs is on the SHRM.org website. However, that does require memebership, but some of their documents are for public use.
Also here are a few other "HR" websites that might be able to help you.

hr-man.com
Good luck!
