Our company only gives out first and last days worked and position held. I had a very irrate
"gentleman" call while I was on vacation and spoke with my assistant telling her this was illegal since he faxed a release from our former ee. He wants more details as to why we let her go. We never give more that I stated. Do we have to if we get a release from ee. I would of course tell a prospective er if there was a violent or criminal history but that does not apply here. Am I ok sticking to our policy as I stated above. Thanks for any input, he is supposed to call back today to talk to me.

What it boils down to is your company can set whatever policy it wants to regarding callers for employment verification. You can give out nothing or you can give out anything truthful from the file that you decide to. Or, you can have a policy like this: Anytime a former employee signs an authorization to release information, we will totally ignore the whole request.
Then hang up the phone !
