Okay - LV's been posting information about the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures (1978) & after doing the 'google' thing - I found this site:

It looks as though the fed's put together a set of guidelines meant to assist employers with their selection processes.

Scuse the edit, but here's part of the uniform act, just for perusal: "Unacceptable substitutes for evidence of validity. Under no
circumstances will the general reputation of a test or other selection
procedures, its author or its publisher, or casual reports of it's
validity be accepted in lieu of evidence of validity. Specifically ruled
out."

Talk about mumbo jumbo. Maybe MWild can pull up some of the old '1968 uniform guidelines for determining when ladies in waiting should be sent home for purposes of giving birth'. I'm sure they're out there somewhere. x:-) Here's my smile!

I cannot begin to express how excited I am to see people using the term mumbo jumbo. I have a warm, tingling feeling in my tummy right now.

I wholeheartedly agree...lots and lots of mumbo jumbo.

I think the Government should hire SteelBoy as a consultant to help them so they can be better situated to provide worthwhile guidelines for us folk who operate in the real world.

Everyone is correct. The guidelines are mumbo-jumbo and guaranteed to put everyone to sleep. I have my copy in a file in my filing cabinet and I make a point of avoiding that file. They will be used, however, if anyone gets caught up in a discrimination case where testing is an issue.

Why? What would be your obligation to consider the contents of such a guideline? Do you presuppose that the court may think we should all be following them? And wouldn't your having them with you in court acknowledge your support of them or at least give them some value?

If you look at any of the big testing cases you will find that the Uniform Guidelines are cited as the standards to follow. I think the reason that no one knows much about the guidelines is that there have been no discrimination charges with testing as an issue for an awful long time. Very large employers who have a department devoted to developing tests will know what they are - for them the guidelines are the "bible".
