I work for a private non-profit domestic violence shelter. A member of our board of directors is insisting that it is a law that we have a sign in our front window prohibiting weapons. Now, of course, it goes without saying that we don't want weapons in a domestic violence shelter, but I was unaware that it was a law that we had to post it. Anyone have information about this? Someone suggested that it's mandatory for state and/or federal buildings to have that posting, but not private facilities, and that makes sense to me. I am currently having to defend my knowledge and abilities on a daily basis with our board, so I need an answer quickly. Thanks in advance!

It's the rules from the state on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program Standards, if that doesn't work, call their business license department & ask for the law or code if there is one.

Regardless of whether or not there's a law, in your line of work, it makes sense to me to post some type weapon prohibition sign.

If it's a law, it's a state law, not a federal mandate. Check your state regs.

However, logically speaking, I'm sure all these people who walk into state offices and blow people away were deterred by the weapons prohibition signs in the window.

Dons right - again - what else. In Michigan, those signs are at the entrances to our courts buildings only.

Thanks for the responses. I could find nothing; I called the Department of Labor, Department of Public Safety, the Council, etc. The link was trememdous help as well. It goes without saying that weapons are prohibited in our facility, I guess we just always figured that people who thought it was OK to bring in a gun probably weren't looking to drop off donations, and therefore, a sign wasn't going to make much difference. My biggest problem is that I have a board member breathing down my neck on this, and he refused to believe me when I told him that a posting like that was not required in a private facility. I knew I could count on folks here to back me up. Thanks again.

In the handout from a lawfirm's "Quirky Questions" legal briefing, they say that Minnesota state law requires a company to post in order to enforce a no gun rule. It's literally one bullet and it looks like it's talking about employees bringing guns, but it caught my eye and reminded me of your post.

maybe you could tactfully ask him to provide you with his source of information or ask him to provide some documentation as you are unable to verify the alleged legal requirement.

It could be mandatory if you want to have the enforcement of any partiuclar law behind you.

You may see signs that Read something like "Possession of a weapon (or whatever the technical term is) in this facility is in violation of company policy and State criminal law, section blah, blah, of the State Statutes blah, blah."

Of course, you always want to let people know what your company policy is so posting should be done anyways.

Check state laws. This type of posting nonsense usually accompanies concealed weapon laws.
