Internship

We have a young man who is a full time college student who we would like to bring on for an internship. It would be unpaid he just wants to get experience in the industry that will help him with school and finding a job upon graduation. I would like to have him intern with us for 90 days at which time we would evaluate his performance and based on the evaluation we would employ him on a part time basis or not extend an offer. He agrees that this is what he wants to do.

Is there any type of paperwork I need to have him fill out (other than an internship agreement)or any rules that I need to follow? He is our first intern and I just want to make sure I keep on the straight and narrow!

I also give them a copy of the employee handbook and have them sign off on understanding that they will be held to the same policies & procedures during their internship. They also sign our Code of Ethics which addresses confidentiality.

Jessicah: The college will also have some paperwork probably as well as a followup evaluation for you to fill out. Internships need not be paid. My daughter is about to enter one that pays only a hundred bucks a month. Our company pays 2400 bucks a month for second year engineering interns. People who are entering the teaching profession typically get no income while student teaching and that's just another form of internship. Have them complete all the paperwork you would have any new ee fill out, except the insurance and benefits paperwork. That's my thought. That's what we do.

Thanks very much! Like I said it is our first intern so I wanted to make sure we were doing the same thing as other places!

and by the way, our interns are covered under the local university's workers comp. policy. They do abide by all of the relevant aspects of our handbook. When you go through your orientation, make sure they understand which policies pertain to them. For instance, the EE benefits section is NA.
