I am looking for advice. We had made a decision that we should not conduct criminal background checks on employees if they are re-hired within a six month period. We are currently re-thinking this decision and are looking for advice. Please do not be facetious. Tks.
I think 6 months is the longest time frame you'll want to go w/o pursuing another background check. Many employers use the 120 day rule, but I have used 6 months for many years and it has worked out fine.
[font size="1" color="#FF0000"]LAST EDITED ON 09-16-03 AT 03:56AM (CST)[/font][p]Using the assumption that one can run afoul of the law on any given day, while employed with you or not with you, if your objective is to throw a tight net over the entire lifetime of a person, in reality, you must throw it wide and often. If you do not check out those small time frames, you have to weigh the risk that they might include activities that a background check would have revealed. And if one is really suspicious of people's reasons for leaving jobs, we might want to suspect that there is a chance every job that's left is related to incarceration or conviction. The real question you should be asking yourself is, "Can a person get into trouble with the law in 180 days and do we need to look to see if they have?"
