E-mail correspondence

We recently ran a classified ad where applicants could submit a resume' via e-mail. Is it appropriate to respond to them via e-mail or should I mail them a letter?

    We have been posting jobs in the internet for a while now and only use email addresses for reply. It is perfectly acceptable to respond electronically to a similar electronic message. We use standard types of responses, it saves a lot of time and candidates are very impressed with the speed of our response.
